Well said, Dan. The fact is Jesus broke a number of religious laws that got him into hot water with the Pharisees, but nothing that would send him to death. Roman law forbade killing someone for religious reasons. What got Jesus in real trouble was his assault of the people in the Temple. Whipping people and overturning their merchant tables in a fit of indignation, well, THAT action broke Roman Law and was what got him arrested by Roman authorities for assault. It was the final straw if you will.

Also, note that many of the so-called laws Jesus broke were not just "fences" (mitzvah), but were bogus laws not original or inherent to Torah to begin with. In today's thinking we've demanded that everything in the Bible is "of God". But, God speaking via the Prophet Jeremiah reminds us that there are false things written within the Torah (see Jer. 8:8). I'm sure James, Jesus, and John (their cousin) knew this all too well.
